Signs, signs! Everywhere are signs! Nowadays it’s almost impossible to navigate your way from A to B without being confronted with some kind placard with printed instructions, informing you of the one correct way to act under the circumstances.
Clearly, signs have their place. Instead of posting a sentry at every intersection to inform visitors of the local customs, signs can do the same job nearly as well, ensuring that newcomers don’t trip on physical pitfalls or social faux pas.
But in our effort to regulate safe spaces, we have allowed signs to proliferate to an alarming extent. Our modern lives have become stifled by so many printed words, circumscribed by all the commandments dominating public spaces.
Under these conditions, we can’t help but be amused when we witness people (and other animals) defying signs. Whether they do it because it’s what just comes naturally, or whether they do it on purpose, just for spite – we laud these anarchists at heart!
